American Beech

Fagus grandifolia

American beech are not available through the Tree Montgomery Shade Tree program. This tree profile is for information only. The American beech is a stately tree with a rather symmetrical and dense crown. It has smooth blue-gray bark; and its green leaves turn yellow in the fall and persist through the winter. This makes the tree interesting throughout the year. Beech nuts are a good source of food for wildlife. This is one of the slowest-growing shade trees in Maryland.
